On Thursday night, November 15th, over 400 students gathered at the Schottenstein Center on the Beren Campus for the annual Battle of the Bands. Yaakov Chesed pulled out all the stops and came away with the win. The prize, as it has been for several years, is being the opening act at the annual YU Chanukah Concert in Lamport Auditorium. The judges for the event were professional musicians from the New York area, Adam Melzer from Neginah Orchestra, Sruly Meyer from Sameach Music, and Dov Katz from Neshoma Orchestra.
Yaakov Chesed is comprised of Michael Shapiro (YC '08), Jake Polansky and Michael Moskowitz from Queens College, and Aryeh Kunstler from Shor Yoshuv. The band also recently won the Battle of the Bands at Landers College and will be releasing their first album titled "Rise Above" at a concert on November 29th at Queens College. Other bands that played were Rug Burn, The Return, Ta Shma, The Jon Lamm Jam, and Avoda. Avoda, which won second place will receive studio time for 2
Avi Cohen (YC '09) commented, "It was great to see how fellow students could come together and make such great sounding music. Yaakov Chesed was amazing, they truly deserved to win."
Battle of the Bands organizer Daniel Bukingolts was ecstatic with the turn out for the event, "Standing watching hundreds of college kids pour into Schottenstein, one of the security guards said to me, 'I hear rock music'. I told her that contrary to popular belief, us Jewish boys know how to ROCK! Battle of the Bands is a great opportunity for talented guys to get out of the Beis Medrash and show off their amazing artistic capabilities to a very energetic and enthusiastic crowd."
Dovi Meles (YC '09) also enjoyed the show saying, "It was great to see so many YU students come out for this event. It was standing room only. I was also impressed by the amount of non-YU students who were at the event. I guess the word out on the street is YU is the place to be."
