Gray skies, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall couldn't stop the Yeshiva University Golf Team from competing in its own tournament, the Yeshiva Invitational at the Hudson Hills Golf Course in Westchester County, New York. Among the teams competing at the tournament were St. Joseph's University, Farleigh Dickinson (both A and B teams), Farmingdale State, Manhattan College, Centenary School, and Polytech University.
Yeshiva finished sixth at the Invitational with a total score of 383. St. Joseph's University came in first place with a total score of 311, while Farleigh Dickinson's 'A' team and Farmingdale State rounded out the top three. All of the teams competed in horrible weather with soaked fairways and extremely soft greens due to all of the rainfall.
Hudson Hills, the private course at which the tournament took place is a long and difficult course in which, according to experts, any score under 95 strokes is deemed very respectable. Junior Joshua Lasky led the team with a score of 87, an outstanding score made even more impressive considering the conditions in which the teams played. Lasky finished 16th among a field of 40 participants. Team captain Robbie Silverman finished second on the Macs' score sheet with a 91, while Seth Greenspan placed third for the team with a score of 97. Senior David Dayan was playing with a very sore back and posted the fourth best score for the team and walked away with a very respectable day.
First year player Phillip Bausk did not complete the round due to a knee injury, but wasn't having the best round of his life before the injury anyway. "We tried to do the best we could," said Bausk. Lasky summed up the day in one simple sentence, "We played our hearts out and really wanted to make a good impression at our own tournament and I think we did a good job of that."
So far this season, the team has put together a couple impressive outings and is looking forward to their next few matches. Seth Greenspan, a two-year veteran of the golf team is looking forward to the team's next match up. "Personally, I feel like we have a really good shot at winning our next match. A win coming right out of vacation would really get the wheels going on the team's season this year."
There is a lot of optimism around the team and its players this season, and Coach David Neiss is proud to be coaching this year's squad. With only a couple of matches left this season, the team feels it still has more to prove, and getting the attention of the University and its students is one of their main hopes. In due time, they believe they will get the recognition they deserve and heads will start to turn as this team lights up the fairways and greens.
