This past Simchat Torah, Torah Tours serviced 75 shuls across North America, including Canada, as well as a congregation in Manchester, England. Some of the locations they visited were Manhattan, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Montreal. They also worked with a number of communities in the tri-state area, in addition to communities in Florida.
Yosef Weg (YC '09) told The Commentator that, "Torah Tours was an incredible experience. The residents of Monsey, NY welcomed us with open arms. We loved it and the community loved it. They invited us back for Shavuot Torah Tours and any random Shabbos in between!"
The Blanche Schreiber Torah Tours program has been going on for more than thirty years. It is a program which sends Yeshiva College, Stern College, and Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) students as well as students from other schools to Jewish communities throughout the United States who request the groups for Simchat Torah.
Students who participate give shiurim and divrei Torah, as well as lead the singing and dancing over Simchat Torah. On Shavuot, the students lead the tikun leiyl Shavuot. The program is made to share the Torah knowledge and enthusiasm of Yeshiva University volunteers with the Jewish communities throughout the world.
Aliza Abrams, Director of the Torah Tours program, said, "The mission is to help communities in need of a little extra ruach and chizuk over the holidays."
This year, total of 400 students participated in Torah Tours. About 90 percent of the participants were YU students and 10 percent were graduate students or undergraduate students from other colleges.
Shuls received teams of up to six young men and women who traveled to their communities for the sole purpose of enhancing their Yom Tov. Participants lead services, taught classes, met with synagogue youth, and helped create a fun and spirited atmosphere.
"Torah Tours is one of the most successful programs in the Jewish community today. This is exactly what YU students need to be doing, 'Bringing wisdom to life.' I can not think of any other organization or college that can pull off such a large scale program like Torah Tours. Torah Tours has become one of the main programs at YU that both students and Jewish communities across the country look forward to year after year," said Dovi Meles (YC '09).
