Pre-Health Advising Turning Up The Heat

Issue date: 10/15/07 Section: News
Among the many new faculty and staff members settling in on Yeshiva University's Wilf campus this year is the new Director of Pre-health advising, Ms. Whitney Bennett. Ms. Bennett joined the staff of the Academic Advising Center this summer, and will be working with the pre-health students throughout their application processes and eventual matriculation into medical, dental and other health schools. "My major goal is helping students to have the strongest application possible that brings in both their individual essence of who they are, while meeting the requirements that are in place as part of the application process," affirmed Bennett.

Ms. Bennett comes to YU with an extensive background in pre-health advising from Columbia's Post-baccalaureate Premedical Program, where she served as the Acting Director of pre-health advising. She is currently a member of the New York City Local Area Network of Pre-health Professions Advisors and she has been active in the Northeast Association of Advisors of the Health Professions.

Additionally, she is well known to the deans of admissions at many medical and dental schools. In a letter to Pre-health students, Dr. Thea Volpe, Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising on the Wilf campus, wrote that Ms. Bennett's "reputation among admissions deans is impeccable and her expertise is wide-ranging." In fact, Ms. Bennett told The Commentator that "when a student needs that extra push," she has the ability to put in a good word at the professional schools, and recommend that their admissions committees "take an extra look" at the student. In addition, because of her close relationship with the admissions committees, Ms. Bennett is "super up-to-date on all the trends."

One of the main attractions at YU for Ms. Bennett is the "opportunity to advocate for the very special student population here. There are values here, especially related to service, that fit very well within the health professions." Furthermore, she is looking forward to dispelling any misconceptions that medical schools may have about the dual curriculum and she will make sure that they truly understand the rigors of the academic program at Yeshiva.
