The SSSB Student Council held their first major event of the semester on the Wilf Campus last Tuesday, October 9. The nighttime event held in Weissberg Commons attracted over 250 undergraduate men and women who listened to several high ranking business professionals discuss educational and professional strategies.
The event was the first part of the year-long series, "Wall Street Connection." SSSB student leaders aimed to attract Syms and Yeshiva College students who are considering work in Corporate America.
Four Wall Street executives, Jeffrey M. Silber, Evelyn Havasi, Ezra Lightman, and Andrew Herenstein were joined by former Yeshiva College professor Leon M. Metzger and addressed students for ten minutes each. The first four are Yeshiva alumni while Dr. Metzger is a former Yeshiva professor and currently serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia, NYU and Yale universities.
YC Alumni and RIETS Board Member Daniel Posner coached the SSSB student council through the preparations for the major event and served as moderator for the beginning part of the night.
In addition, aside from the large contingent of YU students, the crowd was joined by over 40 Yeshiva alumni and friends who, along with the event's speakers, spoke with students about their experiences in the workforce. Many of these alumni currently work at places like Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch
After the speaking portion of the event concluded, students and alumni split up into five groups - featuring five different professional categories within the business world - to have informal discussions about different elements of working on Wall Street. Most students stayed for these discussions which lasted for nearly two hours.
SSSB Student Council President Yehuda Feldman said that "the purpose of the event was intended to educate students about areas of the career opportunities in the business world, and not necessarily to make connections in that world."
Feldman added that his board looked for Yeshiva graduates to show his fellow students that "even the most prestigious positions on Wall Street are very much in reach for our student body."
The event was attended by YU President Richard M. Joel, SSSB Dean Michael Ginzberg, YC Dean David Srolovitz and several other administrators. President Joel, who opened the event, challenged students "to take this crucial time in your lives to explore meaning and to think about not only how you may develop careers on Wall Street, but also how you may develop your values and contribution to society."
