New York City has much more to offer than dance clubs, bars, movie theaters, and bright lights. NYC is known to be one of the most famous cultural hotspots in the world. With sites and events ranging from museums to jazz concerts, New York offers the Yeshiva University student much more than a night at a bowling alley or a good slice of pizza. Furthermore, culture and art is a fundamental principle of Judaism. The Rambam writes that since physical, emotional and mental health is a prerequisite for spiritual growth, a person "should listen to good music, take walks in beautiful gardens and look at beautiful buildings and art forms" (Shemone Perakim ch. 5). Now, we can easily imagine the response of a typical student; "museums and classical music are boring". We know this because we used to be the same way, until we actually experienced the museums and concerts for ourselves.
Allow us to explain why we think that NYC culture is not just academically uplifting, but also fun.
As teenagers, we all know about the classic Saturday night schedule. Shabbat ends, the next minute you are on the phone with your friend trying to figure out what to do, and then you all decide to get pizza and go bowling. Now, as much as we find bowling and pizza fun, how many times can you do this without getting bored? We feel that there are more options that you would enjoy; you may just not know it yet.
New York City boasts a number of Jazz clubs. Jazz clubs offer a relaxed setting to help relieve the tension brought on by a stressful week. With talented musicians playing soothing and calming music, the club is a great place to wind down in a vibrant atmosphere.
Museums, sports events, classical music concerts, art galleries, and Broadway shows, to name a few, can offer the same relief and entertainment for the YU student as going to the movies or grabbing a slice of pizza would.
Every edition of The Commentator will feature a different hotspot throughout NYC in order to inform you of the latest and most interesting events, aided by our recommendations and informed opinions.
Our goal is to open up your eyes and let you know that there is more out there to do. The best part is that these places, whether they be art galleries or jazz clubs, are probably only a few subway stops away!
