Disputed Office Space on Wilf Campus

Office space in Furst Hall was the subject of a week-long disagreement between three Yeshiva rabbis and three members of the Sociology department. The three newly hired Sociology professors, Silke Aisenbrey, Joan Mazelis and Marc Garcelon, were assigned offices that had apparently been occupied by three senior rabbis for quite some time now. In one case, the rabbi has been using his office for over 20 years. This is merely one example of the lack of organization and forethought regarding the use of space on the Wilf campus. According to the Dean's office, "we have too many schools and not enough space."

This year alone, Yeshiva College has increased their faculty by thirteen members, while office space on campus has remained constant for the past twenty years. This is only one explanation to account for why such incidents occur. Furthermore, the doors of some offices still have the names of people who've been gone out of YU?for five years.

According to the Dean's office, the process of acquiring an office appears to function in such a way that a professor can simply pick a room, place his or her books on the desk and the office becomes his or her own. At another end of the spectrum, some faculty members share their offices with as many as three other faculty members.

The Dean's office also told The Commentator that it was unknown that these rabbis had already staked a claim to the disputed offices. When the new professors arrived, they found that the offices they had been assigned were already occupied.

Yeshiva College has taken an active roll in attempting to temporarily rectify the current situation of laissez faire. The Dean's office has created a database consisting of a list of every office on the Wilf Campus and who currently resides in said office. Additionally, an official overseer has been appointed for all matters regarding allocation of space.

As Provost of the University, Dr. Mort Lowengrub is responsible for all office space on the Wilf and Beren campuses. Furthermore, the Dean's Office clarified that "Dr. Lowengrub has asked Dr. Edward Berliner, Senior Director of Science Management, to be the overseer for office space going forward."

Due to the fact the rabbis were here longer, and this being a yeshiva they clearly have the rights to the office space
