Welcome back to what promises to be a great year on the Wilf campus.  The energy of the new semester caused by the students arriving on campus can already be felt throughout the school.  The students are the heart and soul of Yeshiva University and as such, it is the students who make YU a most unique experience.

Although certainly embossed with its seal of Torah u-Madda, YU's many academic and campus life offices provide many opportunities for individuals to grow in their own specific ways.  This "Big Tent" philosophy allows students to find their own niche within the specialized morning programs and both undergraduate colleges.  No student should feel bound to follow a certain path as he travels from semester to semester during their Yeshiva careers.  In fact, by becoming stronger individuals, each of us will be able to better empower our student community.

Many exciting programs are currently underway.  There was a great turnout for the block party last week in the Danciger Quadrangle (In front of Rubin Hall) where students were able to catch up with friends and enjoy snacks and fruit smoothies.  YSU is presently preparing the upcoming YUnite Shabbaton, which will be held the weekend of November 9 at the Sheraton Hotel in Stamford Connecticut.  Everyone who signs up by September 20 will be entered in a raffle to win an iPod Nano.  The YUnite Shabbaton provides a terrific opportunity to spend a Shabbat with a large part of the student body in a relaxed setting.  The gathering of students, rabbinic faculty, deans and administrators for Shabbat is the rare occasion for students to see the leadership of the school in a casual setting.  We hope that the experience will help promote strong relationships among the YU family.  We are also pleased to announce that President Richard M. Joel, as well as many other YU officials, will be participating in this year's YUnite Shabbaton.  This event is one of many opportunities to get involved with student events and improve the environment on our campus.

We're lucky.  This is a very exciting time to be a part of Yeshiva University. The massive construction, renovation, and acquisition of many new buildings on our campus make ours an electrifying environment.  In addition, many new faculty hirings are sure to improve classes offered to students.  Everyone should please take full advantage of the renovated facilities and small student to faculty ratio to fully benefit from this year. The students are paramount and as such it is the students who will enable and exact the university to perform at its best. There are so many opportunities to get involved in the various clubs and events on campus and everyone is encouraged to participate whenever possible.  If there is anything that you would like to speak with me about anytime throughout the year, whether student life or academically related, please email me at dstokar@yu.edu.

As a small school we have the opportunity to have a warm and tightly knit community.   This can be achieved most strongly through active involvement of the student body. Please, reach out and meet new people.  Consider participating in student clubs and activities.  Indeed, we should not forgo the afforded opportunity to have a family oriented campus by restricting ourselves to stereotyped cliques. Get involved, come to events, speak up for yourselves.  In the blink of an eye, we fleetingly race from our first day on campus to graduation  The time we spend here is our opportunity to improve our Yeshiva.
