On August 27, Yeshiva President Richard M. Joel announced the addition of 'Provost' to Dr. Morton Lowengrub's title at Yeshiva University.  Dr. Lowengrub's responsibilities remain essentially unchanged from when he carried his previous title, Vice President for Academic Affairs. However, the front office felt it necessary to acknowledge his dedication to the university.

President Joel commented on the Provost's involvement, saying "Dr. Lowengrub has had a profound impact on the academic enterprise of Yeshiva University."  The promotion came from the recognition that Dr. Lowengrub has put forth resilient efforts to enhance the experience gained by both students and faculty at Yeshiva, according to the President.
Dr. Lowengrub's duties involve reviewing university curricula as well as managing the positions of the faculty and the administration.  In addition, Dr. Lowengrub oversees the inner workings of the undergraduate programs, and of six YU graduate schools.  In a phone interview with The Commentator, Dr. Lowengrub said that he is involved in the University's continuous strategic planning, and that he directs the various deans of the university's administrative structure.
Dr. Lowengrub headed recent search committees responsible for hiring YC Dean David Srolovitz and SSSB Dean Michael Ginzberg.  He oversaw appointments made in various other departments as well.

Dr. Lowengrub graduated with a master's degree from California Institute of Technology and received a doctorate in Mathematics from Duke University. Although he has dedicated the last eight years of his life to Yeshiva, his career dates back many years.

As the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, Dr. Lowengrub received the annual Alliance Award for the Promotion of Excellence, given by the Alliance of Distinguished Rank Professors at Indiana University. During his tenure at Indiana he also held the positions of Chairman of the Mathematics Department, Dean for Research and Graduate Development, and director of the Institute of Advanced Study.

A scholar, the newly appointed provost has also published a number of books and articles dealing with applied mathematics. He also co-authored a number of mathematics textbooks, such as Crack Problems in the Classical Theory of Elasticity and Topics in Calculus. Dr. Lowengrub's experience as a mathematician and author have added to his presence at YU, and it is expected that these credentials will reinforce his authority as Provost.

President Joel talked about the precise work ethic required for such undertakings and that, aside from his years of hard work, Dr. Lowengrub stands out as a friendly and helpful addition to Yeshiva. "His door is always open to faculty and students," President Joel said, "and his commitment and dedication have been instrumental to our efforts."
