"הלוא פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית, כי תראה ערם וכסיתו ומבשרך לא תתעלם"
"Surely, you should share your bread with the hungry and welcome the moaning poor into your home; when you see the naked, clothe them and do not conceal yourself from your kin." (Isaiah 58:7; Haftarah for Yom Kippur)
Our Sages teach us that when tragedy strikes, we must mobilize via prayer and via action. In this season of reflection, we must pray and act for those in need.
In response to an emotional appeal broadcast to the entire YU student body by Rabbi Yisroel Shiff, rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation in New Orleans, and in consultation with the affected areas, the Center for the Jewish Future (CJF), along with our partners, the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) and the Orthodox Union (OU), has committed its resources in the following ways:
Fundraising Efforts
Please visit www.ou.org to donate to the joint fund sponsored by YU/CJF, the OU and the RCA.
Counseling
The CJF is sending YU's Dr. David Pelcovitz, Professor of Education and Psychology at Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, to Memphis. Dr. Pelcovitz is a trauma specialist and will meet with hurricane victims, as well as the teachers and rabbis of the Memphis community.
Quest Leadership Program
QUEST- Quality Education Skills Training, a leadership training initiative, is committing its resources to train field relief team leaders. These teams are training in skills necessary to enable them to deal with the issues they will confront when they visit Houston, Memphis, Atlanta and perhaps New Orleans.
