Welcome to Our Yeshiva

Issue date: 8/31/05 Section: Opinion
Buried deep in the Yeshiva University Archives is probably a document describing the mission of the Student Organization of Yeshiva (S.O.Y.). Despite not having that document within reach, I believe that our duty is to ensure that your religious interests on campus are properly tended to. As our undergraduate student community is quite diverse, S.O.Y. tries catering to everyone; no matter what you're interested in, we've got something for you!

Torah... If it's learning Torah that you'd like to focus on, please be sure to read (and perhaps even contribute to) our successful weekly publication, Einayim LaTorah, prepared and published by fellow students. Throughout the year we will also have inspiring shiurim and stimulating lectures by world-famous individuals, among them prominent roshei yeshiva, professors and communal leaders. Make sure to check out www.YUTorah.org, the online home for Torah from Yeshiva University, where hundreds of articles and shiurim are available for free download. Bear in mind that every Wednesday night at 9:40 PM is the sichat mussar in the main beit midrash, most of the time delivered by a RIETS rosh yeshiva.

Tours. Every year, hundreds of Yeshiva's students celebrate Simchat Torah with communities around North America with the Blanche Schreiber Torah Tours. For the first time ever, the various undergraduate student councils intend on organizing "mini-Torah Tour" weekends, to take place in a variety communities around the tri-state area. Stay tuned for details.

Chulent. One Thursday night a month (beginning September 1, 2005) will be a Yeshiva-wide mishmar program, with open beit midrash learning and the option for special shiurim in the Annex. There will, of course, be a midnight-chulent, where fellow students will deliver short divrei torah.

TheFaceBook.com. We realize that our RIETS roshei yeshiva are our teachers and role models, and therefore, S.O.Y. has embarked on a special undertaking to create a color poster of all of the current RIETS roshei yeshiva and will be available over the next few weeks.
