It seems to me that there are a great number of Yeshiva students who enjoy complaining about the institution. Rather than being proud of the institution that they attend, they prefer to scorn and criticize their school. Perhaps "self-hating" students are a norm on college campuses. I wouldn't know. But I am sure that there is no reason to hate ours. Sure it has its shortcomings and downfalls, but on the whole, it is a premier establishment for higher education, and a leader in Orthodoxy worldwide.
Yeshiva offers a wide array of amenities to all of its students. There is the Writing Center, the Advisement Center, Career Services, Collegiate Sports, Intramurals, student organizations, and the list goes on and on. Being located in New York City, we may not have an enormous campus with beautiful grounds, but we do have so much else to offer.
Furthermore, there is so much to see and do just a short train ride away. It's important that we realize that Yeshiva is a leading university, and by attending, we are putting ourselves on the right path for a bright future.
Each and every student here made the decision to attend Yeshiva, for whatever reason that may be, and each and every student should embrace that decision. Rather than complaining about every fault, let us try to fix its problems while focusing on its innumerable positives.
At the start of this school year, Yeshiva College will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid. In those 75 years, the college has grown by leaps and bounds into what it is today, a college that is annually ranked a Top 50 university by U.S. News and World Report.
I am happy to have the opportunity to serve as the President of the Yeshiva College Student Association for this year, and I look forward to help make this year a better experience for you. Feel free to contact myself, the YCSA Vice-President Josh Brown, or the YCSA Secretary Zevy Hamburger at any time throughout the year with any problems, suggestions, or requests. All of us would be glad to help, and we will do our best to improve YC student life not just for this year, but for the future as well.
There is no reason to be embarrassed to be a Yeshiva student; on the contrary, we should be proud that we attend this first class university; proud to represent the ideals of Torah U'Madda.
