Following the conclusion of the 2004-2005 academic year, the Committee of Independent Colleges and Universities, CICU, announced the election of Yeshiva President Richard Joel to its Board of Trustees. The CICU is a statewide organization of over 100 independent colleges and universities whose members enroll some 440,000 students. With President Joel's election, Yeshiva shares representation with such prestigious institutions as Columbia University, New York University, and Cooper Union.
In his new role, which he shares with 24 other board members, President Joel will aid the CICU in its twin missions to "develop consensus among a diverse membership and to advance higher educational policy."
With regard to the motivation for Joel's election, President Jeanne H. Neff of Sage Universities, the chairperson of the CICU nominating committee, explained that Joel's own input, together with Yeshiva's unique features, will aid the CICU in fulfilling both its goals.
Essential to the CICU's mission of developing "consensus among a diverse membership" is having a varied Board of Trustees that can relate to the different member institutions. According to Neff, Yeshiva's unique features as a "doctoral institution of around 6,000 students in the city of New York" contribute to that diversity.
Moreover, President Joel's election contributes to the CICU's goal of "advancing higher educational policy." As one of the more recent presidents of CICU institutions, President Joel brings with him a newer outlook and a different angle on education. Indeed, Neff remarked "we are always looking for fresh perspectives on higher education issues and newer presidents are often given special consideration for that reason."
Although the duration of a trustee's term on the CICU Board is not entirely set, the terms are staggered, with approximately a third of the trustees newly elected in a given year. Before electing new trustees, the nominating committee assesses the CICU membership to determine the optimum makeup of the Board for fulfilling CICU's missions. The recommendations of current trustees and the interest of potential trustees are also given consideration in this process.
