Air-conditioning units - yes, air-conditioning units - lined the second floor of Rubin Hall this past July, to accommodate some of the 28 high school seniors from across North America who attended the first Summer at Y.U. program. The brain-child of President Richard M. Joel and Stern College for Women Dean Karen Bacon, Summer at Y.U. strove to present high school students with a sample of college life as experienced at Yeshiva.

Like their matriculated counterparts, students spent their mornings and afternoons on the respective Wilf and Beren campuses, engaged in religious and secular studies. The morning shiur, taught by Rabbi Uriel Lubetski, assistant principal of The Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy, and Rabbi David Silverstein, focused on the historical development of the halakhic process. The students learned about the halakha of yayyin nesekh, gentile libation wine, and the approaches of rabbinic scholars in grappling with its relevance. In addition, the rabbis engaged their pupils in philosophical discussions, inviting guest speakers such as Rabbis Yosef Blau, Jeremy Wieder, and Elchanan Adler, among others.

In the afternoons, students chose between two classes. The course offerings on the Wilf Campus were "The World of Finance and Investment," an overview on establishing and analyzing a portfolio of investments, and working with traders, financial planners, and entrepreneurs, and "Explorations in Genetics and Molecular Biology," a laboratory experience introducing students to the theory and techniques of molecular biology. Essentially, a taste of both YC and SSSB. In addition to "Explorations," students on the Beren campus studied "Computer Design," a writing and computer course using Mac computers to design and illustrate poems and stories.

The evenings featured a plethora of co-ed events, including college-preparatory workshops, movie-and-discussions nights, and free time exploring New York City. The program also featured an assortment of exciting trips, presenting the best of New York City life, including tours of the Empire State Building, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum and the Y.U. Museum, a Mets game, and a performance of the off-Broadway show Stomp. In addition, President and Mrs. Richard Joel hosted the group for an evening barbeque at their Riverdale home; "a big highlight [of the trip]", according to Jonathan Korman, a student at Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago.
