Yeshiva Student Union general elections took place last week on the Wilf Campus. On Tuesday May 11, Amsterdam Avenue was abuzz with candidates campaiging in the pedestrain street mall throughout the day, as students went to the polls. Shmulik Rosenberg, CEO of the annual SOY Seforim sale for the past two years, beat Kobi Leifer, a rather new comer to the student political scene. Overall, this year's election was less competitive than in year's past as two of the four most prominent positions - Yeshiva College Student Council president and Sy Syms Student Council Associations president - both were uncontested; YC junior Shuey Jacoby inherited the YCSA presidency and Asaf Fleigelman fell into the SSSBSA presidency.

"The elections ran real smoothly this year. They started and ended roughly on time, there were no real computer glitches and the environment was very competitive, yet pleasant. Every candidate had a distinct personality, a strategy to win and worked very hard to make it a competitive race," said Bradley Karasik, assistant Dean of Students.

Like last year's election, voting was done on computers in Morg Lounge Eli Hamburger, YC '05, Head of Canvassing Committee, designed and implemented a brand new, glitch free, digital voting system that registers students using the barcodes on the school ID cards. "I thought that the new system was very cool and professional," said Rafi Edelman YC '07, "Though it kind of reminded me of being in a supermarket, especially when the receipt with my choices came out for me to review."

The computers also generated a ticker which was then placed in a box to be used in case glitches would be found in the system.
