Halpert Resigns Athletic Director Position

Effective June 30, 2005, Dr. Jonathan Halpert will step down as Yeshiva's Director of Athletics and Physical Education. Halpert's resignation comes only after a year of service in the post, having replaced Dr. Richard Zerneck, former director, this past September. The new director will be the third in eight years.
Halpert, who earned his doctorate from Yeshiva's Ferkauf Graduate School in 1978, will continue as the basketball team's head coach, where he has amassed 325 wins in his 35 years.
Despite his short stint as director, Halpert cites many positive aspects from his year at the helm. Most important, Halpert says, was getting to know a huge percentage of the student body, as opposed to merely the 15 guys he works with on the basketball team.
However, he said he did not enjoy the paperwork aspects of the job, a huge component of which is scheduling games and coordinating buses for the various athletic teams.
Halpert's tenure was marked by a number of significant expansions within the athletic program. He founded an Exercise and Health Club at Stern College for Women to begin this coming September, which will feature classes in pilates and Tae Bo. He also improved the basketball intramurals, which he deemed "on the verge of extinction" at the beginning of the year, and now feature 14 teams playing regularly.
But Coach Halpert feels his biggest success was the creation of the club baseball team, which he predicts will be "the most competitive team on campus within 4-5 years."
A search committee for the new director, which includes Halpert and Zerneck, has identified an outside candidate. They hope to finalize a deal with the undisclosed candidate soon in order to allow him to begin in July.
Prior to this year, Halpert was CEO of Camelot, an agency that provides residential and educational services for handicapped adults and their families.
