Following a unanimous decision last week, the Governing Board of The Commentator Volume LXIX voted in Ari Fridman as its next Editor-in-Chief beginning fall 2005. This will mark Fridman's third year with the paper. He began during his first semester on campus as a staff writer in the News section and was promptly fast-tracked to an editorial position as News Editor by his second semester. This year Fridman served as Executive Editor and contributed frequently as a columnist.

A native of the holy city of Teaneck, New Jersey, Fridman attended the Frisch Yeshiva High School sometime during the late 90s, though graduation records cannot be found. Later he spent a year at the noted Reishit Yerushalayim in Beit Shemesh, and completeda half-year stint at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Alon Shevut. Despite extensive research, The Commentator could not find a correlation between the two institutions.

At Yeshiva, Fridman has been studying Jewish Studies and will complete a minor in English on the side. He brings a slew of talents to the newspaper leadership, having served as a congressional intern for Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor, the Chief Deputy Majority Whip. "Working in the Cantor office was like peeking into the inner workings of the real world," said Fridman. "I learned more than how not to burn coffee. It was a priceless adventure which I hope to lean on during my tenure here."

This summer, Fridman will intern at the prestigious Washington Institute for Near East Policy in Washington, D.C.

Among his future plans for The Commentator, Fridman intends to reduce "the husbanding of resources that has plagued the newspaper over the past few years. We need to expand our influence and invite a greater population to contribute. Otherwise we appear flaccid and ineffective."

Fridman takes over "the official newspaper of the Wilf Campus" at a pivotal time, during The Commentator's seventieth year of existence - started in March of 1935. Though in recent years The Commentator has usually been run by two Editor-in-Chiefs, Fridman's appointment will mark the second year in a row that only one editor has taken rule.

Fridman will also be picking up the paper as it comes off the heels of a uniquely productive year that saw a tripling of the newspaper's online readership and renewed enthusiasm among its print circulation - not to mention a near lawsuit by a prominent American literary figure and a public lynching by the women of Stern College.

Fridman's parents, Dr. and Dr. Fridman, are extremely proud of his appointment. "When Ari was a zygote we were not sure he would be newspaper material," said Dr. Fridman. "But then when he finally finished his first volume of Dr. Seuss in honor of his Bar-Mitzvah, well, we knew he had a great literary future."

Fridman hopes to have his first issue ready before the first day of classes on August 31.
