In honor of "Fortune" Magazine's 75th anniversary, it recently published a special edition with the cover story entitled "The best advice I ever got," which included advice from 28 extremely successful business tycoons such as Warren Buffet and Jack Welch. The insightful article, only 15 pages in length, left readers wanting. But fortunately for students at Yeshiva's Sy Syms School of Business, there is always The Doris and Dr. Ira Kukin Entrepreneurial Lecture Series.
Since 1995, SSSB has offered an annual course in "Contemporary Business Problems" which invites CEOs, executives, and successful business leaders to speak of each class and then field questions for the remainder of the period. Over the years SSSB has hosted many familiar names such as Abby Joseph Cohen, a prominent analyst at Goldman Sachs, Warren Eisenberg co-founder of Bed Bath & Beyond, Joel Mael, Vice Chairman of the Florida Marlins, and even two business tycoons featured in the "Fortune" magazine article: Sumner Redstone, Chairman and CEO of Viacom, and David Neeleman, CEO of Jet Blue.
Of course this year's lecture series has been no exception. So far this year, lectures have been given by Alan "Ace" Greenberg, legendary chairman of Bear Stearns & Co., Josh Weston, retired Chairman and CEO of Automated Data Processing, Dr. Josef Straus, retired Chairman and CEO of JDS Uniphase, Marco Zarikian, CEO of Hotel Eurobuilding Internacional (Venezuala), Michael Palitz, Managing Director of Preston Partners, Leon Cooperman, Chairman and CEO of Omega Advisors, Inc., Steven H. Krein, CEO of Finishrich Media, and two people from National Financial Partners: Arthur Ainsberg, board member, and Elliot Holtz, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Firm Operations. (Eliot Holtz filled in for Jessica Bibliowicz, President and CEO of National Financial Partners and daughter of Sandy Weil, Chairman of Citigroup, who unfortunately couldn't come due to a last minute board meeting.)
Redstone told the crowd the best advice he ever received was to "follow your own instincts, not those of people who see the world differently."
