The ball glides across the court into the hands of star MTA point guard, senior Yossi Faber. He pumps once, faking the defender, and let's off a shot from behind the three-point line. The ball gently arches in the air before finally sailing through the back of the net. A whistle blows, and the team realigns into identical formation. Practice continues.
Daniel Gibber, now in his second year as head coach of the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy (MTA) Lions, blows his whistle and Faber and the rest of the team crowd around him. After suffering a disappointing loss to the RaMaz Rams a week earlier, the Lions enter the 14th Annual Red Sarachek Invitational High School Basketball Tournament with something to prove.
"The entire year we're preparing for the Yeshiva League, so we now need to regroup," says Faber. "We're playing to win it."
Coach Gibber gently blows his whistle again and the team heads back onto the court. The Lions finished the 2005 Yeshiva League season with a somewhat disappointing 10-4 record, following last year's undefeated season. But they still enter the tournament with high expectations.

The Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament took place at the Max Stern Athletic Center (MSAC) from March 31 through April 4. High School basketball teams from all over the nation and Canada competed against one another, attempting to claim the championship title. In total, 38 games of fierce, competitive basketball games took place.
For many students, the tournament, run by Yeshiva's Office of Admissions, is one of the more exciting campus events of the year. At all times of the day, Yeshiva students can be seen packing into the Max Stern Athletic Center (MSAC). "Sadly, Sarachek, a high school tournament, is the highlight of my campus life," said Scott Burgher, YC 06'.
In addition to the MSAC, some games are played at the Torah Academy of Bergen County and the Frisch School.
All the games are broadcast over the internet by MacsLive Reporting Services, at www.macslive.com. Last year, there were over 330,000 hits to the website during the month of March, when the tournament took place.
