The Book of Esther may be read as early as the 11th of Adar, and in choosing a seasonally appropriate event, the sophomore class decided that the celebration aspect of Purim could also begin a few days ahead of time. On March 21, they held a "freilichin" event that included music, pizza, and bowling with friends from Ohel, a foundation that serves children and adults, individuals and families who are confronted with personal challenges.

The evening began with dancing to the sweet music of Jeremy Gaisin and the Midnight Remedy Band, who played selections from their all-new Purim tunes. The crowd also enjoyed several jokes from the Ohel participants. Once Stern students arrived, the party became even more intense, as a mechitza was set up and the female Ohel participants had people with whom they could dance. For some, the highlight of the evening was the abundance of pizza left over after the dancing. Several people took advantage of this to cover their lunches for the next few days. The crowd of one hundred then boarded the busses and headed off to bowling.

At the lanes, the competition heated up as Wilf and Beren campus students, and Ohel participants broke into teams for some spirited games.

"In all, it was an easy and enjoyable way to do a little chesed (kindness) during the week," Sophomore Class Vice President Alan Kleinerman said. "The class leadership tried very hard to make an event that would appeal to all, and I think we were quite successful at doing that."

Stern College for Women sophomore Evy Stieglitz was equally enthusiastic. "Who could say no to doing chessed? And plus, Jews love to bowl." Much of the same could be heard from the rest of the participants, and people wanted to know when the next event like was scheduled to be held.

"You can be sure that it will happen very soon," Sophomore Class Treasurer Ayol Samuels responded when asked about future similar programming. Even before the night was over, planning had already begun for the next Sophomore class event, possibly another joint effort with Ohel.

A night that includes twenty-nine boxes of pizza, four busses, and bowling for hundreds of students certainly doesn't plan itself. The class administration was quick to thank Student Services and everyone else who contributed to make the evening so incredibly successful.
