Following a series of hirings at the University level, President Richard M. Joel recently announced the appointment of much-admired educator Rabbi Mark Gottlieb to the position of Head of School at the Yeshiva University High School for Boys/The Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy (YUHSB/TMSTA), an affiliate of Yeshiva, as well as a newly-created role of Advisor to the Vice President for University Life on Educational Continuity. At this University level position, Rabbi Gottlieb will work closely with its university life vice president, Dr. Hillel Davis, and Dr. Morton Lowengrub, Yeshiva's Vice President of Academic Affairs.
In his March 10 announcement of the appointment, President Richard M. Joel called Rabbi Gottlieb "an outstanding role model wiath a deep understanding of the culture and values that are at the core of our mission," said President Joel. "These new positions will help support a vibrant relationship between the high school and the larger university community."
Though unwilling to speculate regarding specific changes to be made in his new position until he arrives, Rabbi Gottlieb believes that YUHSB should ideally serve as a "lab school" for the larger Yeshiva community. Rabbi Gottlieb intends on collecting "the intellectual, religious and material resources of Yeshiva, from 'human capital' in the form of inspiring Roshei Yeshiva and college professors, Teaching interns and mentors from the graduate schools and RIETS, to curricular initiatives, cutting-edge co-curricular programming and updated facilities, should be leveraged to deliver the most powerful impact on the hearts and minds of our young, modern orthodox men in the High School," he told The Commentator in a recent interview.
President Joel is confident that Rabbi Gottlieb's dual-appointment "will help support a vibrant relationship between the high school and the larger university community." Rabbi Gottlieb intends on "shaping a comprehensive and systemic approach towards religious education that considers the relationship and continuity between secondary school education, the year in Israel, the colleges, [RIETS] and our graduate schools."
