On March 20, 32 teams and countless fans gathered together for a night of non-stop basketball. Not for the NCAA tournament, not even for Sarachek. These ninety-six players and their fans were here to celebrate March Madness - YU style. 3-on-3, the quintessence of Jewish basketball, was the game that graced the floor of the Furst gym that fateful night. No slam-dunks, no cornrows, no head-butts, just fundamental basketball.
Isaac Breuer College (IBC) President Binyamin Casper and his trusty sidekick, Vice President Adir Greenberg decided, after much deliberation, that it was time for IBC to become more active. "We have this position of leadership," said Casper, "and it would be a shame not to do anything with it." And so, the first Yeshiva 3-On-3 Charity Basketball Tournament was born. With Purim less than a week after the tourney, it made sense for this to be a charity event, in accordance with the commandment to give charity on Purim. All of the proceeds were donated to the One Family Fund in Israel.
All things considered, the tournament was a huge success. After not knowing if they would even get twenty teams, Casper and his "posse" were able to secure thirty-two teams and were even forced to turn away a number of late applicants. The games proceeded non-stop for about four hours. "It was pretty intense," said one excited fan. "I didn't know which way to look. There were so many games going on."
A sum total of $6000 dollars was raised, thanks to the joint effort of everyone involved: the players, the referees, the scorekeepers, the Athletic Department, and most importantly, all of the excited fans.
