"There is no topic that touches our daily lives as this one," said Yeshiva College Dean, Norman Adler about the subject that drew a large crowd to the Jacob Burns Moot Court at Yeshiva's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law on February 27. The symposium entitled "The Political Face of Religious Fundamentalism," was sponsored by the Rabbi Arthur Schneier Center for International Affairs in conjunction with the Yeshiva College Book Project. It brought together lecturers from different universities, ethnicities, and religions.

The symposium, which was in honor of Yeshiva College's seventy-fifth anniversary, was emceed by Dean Norman Adler and attracted Chancellor Norman Lamm, Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Morton Lowengrub, and Rabbi Arthur Schneier, among other faculty members of Yeshiva. The audience came to hear three 20 minute lectures delivered on various aspects of religious fundamentalism.

The first, delivered by Dr. Martin Marty, professor emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity at the University of Chicago, addressed Christian fundamentalism. Dr. Marty has literally written the book on religious fundamentalism. His multi-volume Fundamentalism Project is considered to be the definitive work on the subject.

The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Bassam Tibi, professor of International Relations at the University of Goettingen, Germany, concerning Islamic fundamentalism. Dr. Tibi assisted Dr. Marty on one of the volumes of his book.

The final lecture was given by Dr. Samuel Heilman, professor of Sociology at Queens College, City University, regarding Jewish fundamentalism. Dr. Heilman has written many books on Judaism including "Modern Orthodox Jews in America" and "Defenders of the Faith: Inside Ultra-Orthodox Jewry." The Center originally invited University Professor Haym Soloveitchik, a tenured professor at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies. But as Dr. Soloveitchik is away on a sabbatical at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he suggested Dr. Heilman to lecture in his place.
