With Yeshiva College dean Norman Adler's recent appointment to University Professor of Psychology and Special Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Yeshiva administration has begun the search for his successor.
Recently, the Office of Academic Affairs released an open letter to the Yeshiva community and advertised in various newspapers, publicizing the available position in an attempt to draw as many qualified nominees as possible. The candidate search will continue until March 31, at which point the Yeshiva College Dean Search Committee will begin screening nominees and narrowing the field.
The Yeshiva College Dean Search Committee boasts ten members, selectively handpicked by President Richard M. Joel. Along with Dr. Lowengrub serves Dr. Karen Bacon, Dean of Stern College for Women, Dr. Yaakov Elman, professor of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva, Dr. Joanne Jacobson, chair of the English department, Dr. David Rettinger, professor of Psychology, Dr. Moshe Tendler, professor of Biology and a Rosh Yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, and Dr. Fredy Zypman, professor of Physics, make up the faculty element of the committee. YC '06, Joshua Jacoby, and YC Board Members, Mr. Joshua Muss and Mr. Stanley Raskas, round out the group.
Dr. Morton Lowengrub, Vice President for Academic Affairs and chairman of the search committee, expects to be able to "give three or four names to the president, certainly by the end of the semester."
However, Dr. Lowengrub admitted, "sometimes it takes a little longer than that." Quiet on the possibility that the next dean could come from within the university, Dr. Lowengrub simply outlined certain qualities that the committee looks for in the dean of YC.
"The new dean should be a person committed to academic excellence in its broadest sense, as well as to the Torah u-Madda philosophy embraced by our University," said Dr. Lowengrub. The open letter to "the Yeshiva University Community" also identified exceptional integrity, ambitious leadership, and strong management skills as essential qualities in a candidate.
The committee will convene every two weeks, and, after submitting three or four final candidates to President Joel by semester's end, will continue to advise him, although the final decision will be his.
Dr. Lowengrub notes that Yeshiva is currently "at the very early stages of the search, although we do have some dossiers already." Some nominees have expressed great interest in the position, while "in some cases," Dr. Lowengrub said, "I'll talk them into being considered."
In addition to chairing the Yeshiva College Dean Search Committee, Dr. Lowengrub serves as vice chairman of the dean search at Yeshiva's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, another school going through a similar transitional phase. Current Dean Dominick P. Purpura intends on discontinuing his service as dean, and a 30 member committee has been formed to search for his replacement.
