The greatest honor an institution can receive is outside recognition, and so it was a real credit to the Yeshiva community when Dr. Deborah Y. Cohn, an assistant professor of Marketing at the Sy Syms School of Business, was honored last month with the Direct Marketing Day Foundation Inc. (DMDF) Professor Award for 2004.

The DMDF, based in New York City, is an independent nonprofit corporation serving the direct and interactive marketing industry. Its goal is to provide funding to educators for resources and scholarships to help students build careers in the direct marketing field. DMDF supports direct and interactive marketing programs at the college and university levels.

In keeping with their mission to identify talent and foster the growth of the direct marketing community, in 2002 the DMDF launched its highly proclaimed Professor Award program. The award is presented annually to "an outstanding educator and school in recognition of their dedication and leadership in furthering knowledge of direct marketing within the academic community."

In 2002 and 2003, Dr. Cohn received grants from the DMDF for educational material, which she uses to teach the Interactive Advertising classes. In 2003, she was also chosen by Sy Syms student to receive The Lillian F. & William L. Silber Professor of the Year Award, in recognition of her outstanding teaching abilities.

Dr. Charles Snow, dean of SSSB, said that the Professor Award is a source of pride, for Dr. Cohn and the entire School of Business. "Deborah is an excellent teacher who has previously been voted by students as Teacher of the Year. It is gratifying to see an outside organization also recognize her talents, and to acknowledge the superior education provided by the Syms faculty."

For her part, Dr, Cohn was both flattered and pleased at the unexpected honor. "I was surprised when they announced my name for this award at the college student career forum. I attended this event with my students who were all cheering for me. It makes me feel very encouraged and satisfied as teacher when my efforts are recognized."

"It is always a pleasure to work with the DMDF. Due to their efforts, the students' enthusiasm for careers in direct and interactive marketing is growing."
