The Leadership Incubator

In keeping with Yeshiva's mission to "Ennoble and Enable," the Presidential Graduate Fellows Program recently released its first creative project, a leadership incubator to promote student involvement in humanitarian projects.

The leadership incubator aims to cultivate students' creative initiatives and bring them to fruition, from their premature, theoretical stages all the way into operation. The program is meant to serve a dual purpose of enabling Yeshiva students to pursue humanitarian projects that have been until now financially or systematically unfeasible and to promote Yeshiva's growth in the academic and general communities.

According to Rachel Cyrulnik, Stern College for Women '04, and a Presidential Fellows in the Office of University Life, "this program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who aspire to transform their innovative humanitarian idea to reality. This opportunity offers the student body a chance to make a difference throughout the broader community. In addition, it should help improve life on campus, boost enrollment, and play a role in the future public relations efforts of Yeshiva University."

President Richard M. Joel's graduate fellows will have full responsibility for implementing the project, and will oversee the project selection process. Once applications are received, which can be obtained through the Yeshiva University website, they will be reviewed by the fellows, who then select five proposals to be submitted to a committee made up of faculty, Graduate Fellows, and not-for-profit professionals.

"This process has already begun in earnest," said Cyrulnik. "We have begun compiling a list of people to be approached, and we will have completed this process within the next few weeks."

While the students will be responsible with staffing their own projects, managing day-to-day business concerns, and organizing fundraising and promotional events, they will maintain a relationship with an advisory committee. The committee will make sure that University resources such as legal council, fiscal advice, and development training are made available to the students so that after a 1-3 year period the organization can experience a smooth transition to independence.
