On Wednesday night, December 8, the Max Stern Athletic Center was home to the rather unfamiliar sight of men clad in white suits. For the first and last time of the season, the Men's Varsity Fencing Team held a home meet, hosting Hunter College. Hopes were high for the meet, with the slightly overmatched Macs coming off of a resounding victory over St John's College the Sunday before. And as one of the judges pointed out, they also had history on their side; the match coincided with the second night of Chanukah, a mere 2,100 years after another underdog Macs team was victorious.
Unfortunately, history was not to repeat itself, and the Macs' fencers fell to Hunter, 15-12. However, the night was not a complete disappointment for Head Coach Pete Rosas.
"The team performed admirably," he said. "Hunter has always been a tough team."
As to the performance of the team in general, Rosas said that "we are in a rebuilding stage. Unfortunately, not everyone on the team is a veteran." He added, with a chuckle, "Watch out for us next year."
Nor was the team feeling too dejected by their loss. Team Captain and epee fencer Isaac Wagner YC '05 said, "For our experience, we performed very well." He added, "we have been fencing some very hard schools, with individuals who have been fencing for many years, while our team is made up of fencers for whom Yeshiva was their first time holding a weapon."
Asked about the way the team is run, Wagner gushed that "the coaches are extremely dedicated, and put in a lot of effort, above and beyond the call of duty. They care about our growth as fencers and people, much more than just winning."
There were also some personal highlights despite the team's loss. Team manager and sabre weapons leader Mark Rossler YC '05 was victorious in all three of his bouts, not an easy task against Hunter, a school prominent for its saber squad. His performance was matched by second year saber fencer David Elman, YC '07. Epee veteran Hillel Charm YC '05, was also undefeated in three bouts.
