The end of the semester is always an opportune time to reflect back on all the events SOY has organized this semester and to thank all those who have helped us coordinate them.
This year marked the first time ever in YU history that an event was held on every single night of Chanukah: The kumzitz with Dani Schwartz and Yaacov Young, the annual Chanukah Chagigah starring Lipa Schmeltzer, the annual undergraduate student council Chanukah concert, Shabbos with R' Reichman, and finally a trivia game hosted by President Richard M. Joel (thank you to Menachem Butler for running the entire event). Every event drew excellent attendance.
SOY has also hosted many speakers on campus this semester, including Rabbi Avraham Avidan, Rabbi Azarya Berzon, Rabbi Michael Yammer, Rabbi Eli Reich, Rabbi Kenneth Brander, Rabbi Dovid Goldwasser, and Rabbi Yaacov Haber, in addition to the mussar shmooze given by President Joel, the weekly mussar shmoozes given in the Beis Medrash and several Melave Malkas hosted by several of the Roshei Yeshiva.
The changes SOY has made in the Beis Medrash have certainly been noticed as well: the installation of a computer with Bar-Ilan software, new seforim, a coffee machine, and SOY tissues.
Of course, there has also been the annual SOY Shabbaton, attended by Dean Adler, and several of the Rosh Yeshiva. After a short holiday, the weekly publication Einayim LaTorah (thank you to Harold Rosengarten) has been restarted and Mibayit v'Lachutz (thank you to Tal Kerem) continues to come out for the yomim tovim.
All of these events could not have happened without the hard work invested by the SOY board: Shmulik Rosenberg, Vice President, Netanel Munk, Secretary, and Chaim Williams, Treasurer.
Shmulik, in particular, has been a terrific asset to the student body in general, whether by single-handedly running the entire SOY Seforim Sale, assisting me with running SOY, or working on behalf of all the students. Much of Shmulik's daily behind-the-scenes work goes unnoticed by the student body, and as such I would like to thank Shmulik on behalf of the entire student body for all the time and effort he invests into improving life in the university.
Finally, I would like to thank Zev Nagel for his outstanding leadership of The Commentator. With Zev at the helm, The Commentator has been a source of pride for our university, coming out regularly and consistently, and portraying the goings-on truthfully and accurately.
Look forward to next semester, when we plan to host a SOY/TAC Shabbaton, many speakers, chagigot, free tefillin checks, and many more events.
On behalf of the SOY board, I'd like to wish everyone hatzlacha on their finals and a relaxing and productive winter break.
