In an attempt to enhance the experience of the large contingent of Yeshiva students in Israel, Mark Lehrman was recently named director of the S. Daniel Abraham Israel Program. In his new post, Lehrman will work closely with Howard Weisband, the newly appointed senior advisor of Israel affairs to President Joel. The duo intends to extend programming and services to students studying abroad in Israel.
A graduate of Yeshiva College, Lehrman also earned his Masters in Jewish history from the Bernard Revel Graduate School. After moving to Israel in 1993, Lehrman has worked at Yeshiva's Caroline and Joseph S. Gruss Institute in Jerusalem since 1995. His previous jobs there include Israel advisor and Assistant Director of Admissions.
Lehrman is known to many in the metropolitan New York area from his work at camp HASC, the Hebrew Academy for Special Children. Lehrman has worked at HASC for 22 years, first as Head Counselor and then as Program Director. The summer camp is a seven week program for mentally and physically handicapped Jewish children and adults, and has gained renown for its unique and capable staff.
Lehrman will have his work cut out for him as director of Yeshiva's ever- growing Israel program. It has almost doubled in size in the last decade despite increased security issues that have arisen since the eruption of the intifada four years ago. Around four hundred students are annually enrolled in the program. The program is affiliated with 44 Israeli boy's yeshivot, girl's seminaries, and universities.
Dr. Hillel Davis, Vice President of Student Life, remarked on the recent appointment, "Mark is a talented professional who is committed to Yeshiva and to the vision that President Joel has articulated for our students and community... his promotion to this new full time role reflects our deepening commitment to the S. Daniel Abraham program as an integral part of the overall YU experience."
Lehrman's appointment comes at the heels of two other major appointments made by President Joel for issues pertaining to Israel and Judaism as a whole. Last month, Weisband was named senior advisor of Israel affairs, and a month prior to that, Rabbi Kenneth Brander was hired to spearhead Yeshiva's newly established Center for the Jewish Future. In his September 2003 investiture speech, President Joel expressed his commitment to Israel as stressed in his September 2003 investiture address.
Mr. Lehrman currently lives in Efrat with his wife Dena, their two daughters, and a foster child.
