Who knew one blog post could set off such a flurry of action? Well, when Dick "Hoops" Weiss, columnist at the New York Daily News and USBWA college basketball writers' Hall of Fame member, reported that Dr. J. Halpert, coach of 36 years at Yeshiva University, is being replaced by Ron Ganulin, a former division one coach, questions needed immediate answering. And on late Thursday night and early Friday morning, clues were collected and the situation clarified.
After speaking with Associate Athletic Director, Michael Spinner, and basketball coach Dr. Halpert, it seemed fairly clear that Weiss was the victim of inaccurate information. Joe Bednarsh, Athletic Director, ensured it was false by stating: "I'll say it in no uncertain terms....there is absolutely no truth to that rumor. Dr. Halpert is the coach and will be the coach going forward. He is the perfect coach for this school and I have no reason to and it would be detrimental to the [basketball] program to change coaches right now."
When contacted by The Commentator, Dick Weiss immediately looked into the situation, realized he was misinformed, and apologetically revised his post to reflect the new information. Ron Ganulin, ex-St. Francis basketball coach and Manhattan assistant coach, would not be coaching at Yeshiva in 2008-2009; rather, he will be patrolling the sidelines at North Shore Hebrew Academy. Meanwhile, as he has for the past 36 winters, Coach Halpert will be guiding the Yeshiva Macs on their yearlong quest for glory.
Good luck to both.
